Notable History: In the early 1900's this was home to North Adam's first Mayor- Albert C. Houghton and his family. On August 1st, 1914, John Widders, their chauffer, was driving Albert Houghton, his daughter Mary Houghton, and a family friend, Sybil Hutton to Vermont. They came up to a road crew on a mountain road so John Widders swerved to the side of the road to avoid them. The vehicle hit a soft shoulder and rolled off the road and violently down the steep embankment. Sybil died immediately and Mary died on the way to the hospital. John Widders and Albert Houghton suffered minor injuries. Early the next morning in the barn behind the mansion John Widders committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol. Mayor Albert Houghton died 9 days later, some say because of overwhelming despair.
