History of Warner, NH
-Kearsage Mountain is the tallest mountain for this area. 5 towns claim ownership of it (Warner, Wilmot, Andover, Sutton and Salisbury) I think all of these towns might have been Warner back in Franks’ time.
-March 1739 taxes were put into effect in Warner.
-In 1762 the first settlements were made by Daniel Annis and Reuben Kimball with their families. Kimball was the son in law of Annis, they both came from Hopkington.
-Abijah Watson (Uncle Frank’s Grandfather) lived in the corner of Salisbury. He was a farmer and a minister. His sons were Elder Joseph, Nicodemus (Uncle Frank’s Father), Abijah, David and Jonathan. The year they settled is unknown.
-The first Inn, Tavern, Hotel or whatever it might have been called back then was the Bleak House erected in 1766 by Jacob Hoyt.
-The first church was organized and settled on Feb. 5, 1776. The first minister was William Kelley.
- War of 1812 happened just before Frank was born.
-Divorce of Church and state happened on July 1, 1819.
-On Sunday Sept 9, 1821 a tornado came through Warner. Suffered a loss of property equal to about $9,000.
- The first high school building was built in 1871. First term was Dec. 4th 1871.
-Nathaniel Green was the first Lawyer.
-First Deputy sheriff was Calvin Flanders. Was appointed around 1790 and was in office nearly 20 years.
-Dr. John Currier was the first physician.
-Around the time Uncle Frank died the population was 1,383.
-In 1894 was the first fire engine and Hose Company No. 1.
-The old town hall was built in 1849.
-Pillsbury Free Library opened in 1891. (still stands today)
-The former Baptist Church built in 1833 is now the Masonic Temple.
-The Railroads in Warner were built in 1848 and the last one stopped running in 1955. The tracks were then torn up and sold as scrap iron.
-In 1899 the first automobiles were seen in Warner.
-First Gristmill built in 1768 by Capt. Francis Davis.
-For Business they had: Gristmills, Sawmills, Box Factories, Excelsior Mills, Hub Companies, Gloves Companies, Electric Corporation, Fuel Companies, Blacksmiths, Evaporating plants, Creameries, Breadboxes, and retail stores.
